Who Is
One Spirit?
The name “One Spirit” is
based on Philippians 2:2 … “Then make my joy complete by being like minded
having the same love, being in one spirit and purpose.”
One Spirit started out as a trio made up
of Ross and Cathy Reynolds along with
Robert "Bob" Wentzel.
They all met while attending church together at Del Norte Baptist Church
in 1981 and have been friends ever since. Though
each of them have their own musical talents, it wasn’t until September of 1997
that they started singing together. They
were part of a team that helped to start a new church in Tucson called God’s
Country Church. God’s Country is a
non-traditional church featuring southern, country and traditional gospel music
that meets on Saturday nights. Ross
was the Music/Band Director and played guitar while Bob and Cathy sing in the
band. Bob also played bass for the
church.
It was a long time desire of
Ross and Cathy to one day be able to go out and sing on their own.
Unknown to them, it was also a long time desire of Bob’s.
Many times people would ask Ross if God’s Country Band could come and
sing at their church and sometimes they would.
However, trying to coordinate the schedules of all the band members (who
all attended other churches on Sunday mornings) was nearly impossible.
It was around June or July of 1999 when Ross and Cathy felt that the Lord
was leading them to start a separate singing group although they never mentioned
it to anyone.
In August of 1999, Bob asked
Ross to accompany him on the guitar so he could sing a church where his dad was
going to be preaching. After the
service they went to lunch together and Ross began to share what the Lord had
laid upon his heart about starting a group.
Bob couldn’t believe what he was hearing.
Bob went on to share with Ross that he had felt the same way for sometime
and had been praying to that end but didn’t want to say anything for fear of
interfering with God’s timing. After
many more prayers “One Spirit” was formed
and they had their first concert in October of 1999.
After trying a couple of names for the trio, all of which were taken by
other groups, they felt that because of all the prayers that had gone into
getting the group started – the only fitting name was “One Spirit”.
… “being like minded…being in one spirit and purpose…”.
Ross, Cathy and Bob have
been friends for over 25 years and are more like family than friends.
They continue to ask the Lord for guidance in where and when to sing.
God has blessed their group keeping them busy and being the inspiration
for their song writing. Their goal
is not to be entertainers but rather lead the congregation in worship and praise
of the Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
After Bob was married to
Diane in August of 2006 he felt the calling to leave One Spirit and start his
own ministry of both preaching and singing. They attend Silverbell Baptist
Church where Robert has started his new ministry of preaching under the guidance
of Pastor Phil Dunham. Robert will be singing with One Spirit through
August of 2008. Ross and Cathy still feel led by God to keep singing and
will be continuing the ministry of One Spirit and hope to release a new CD in
the fall or winter of 2008.
